Glyndebourne Wood

Woodland Walk

Glyndebourne Wood

Our 4.5ha woodland is a short walk away from the Adventure Playground and has a 800m circular trail through it describing many aspects of woodland management. An accompanying leaflet is available in the Information Centre and in boxes at the entrance to the Wood. Within the Wood are three contrasting areas; two plantations (Scots Pine and Western Hemlock) and a boundary zone of native deciduous trees. The whole area is managed as a working woodland, a wildlife habitat and a recreational facility. One of our orienteering courses is wholly within the Wood while a longer one covers both woodland and open land.

An "Early Woodworking Centre" is being developed in conjunction with the East Sussex Archaeology & Museums Project. Two Anglo-Saxon houses have been reconstructed from local wood based on evidence from a site at Bishopstone near Seaford. An Anglo-Saxon house in Glyndebourne WoodOne has been roofed with wooden tiles and another thatched, allowing speculation about original building methods and uses of such buildings. Also in this part of the Wood is a Bronze Age house and walkway, a prehistoric bread oven and a Belgic (1st century BC) kiln for firing pots. This is an exciting area for children to investigate at any time of year but really comes alive during our annual WoodFair.

Several interesting sculptures have been created during WoodFair and they, too, are displayed in the Wood.

Orienteering

We have three simple B.O.F (British Orienteering Federation) approved Permanent Courses on the Estate. These are equally suitable for families and school groups. A4 maps can be purchased in the Shop for a small charge. The shortest of our three courses takes about 10 minutes to run, and the longest is only 2.0km but can last as long as you like if you take in the surroundings as you go!
